At château Saint Esteve de Néri one can enjoy the glories of provence – its sights, smells and tastes. The domaine is located near the picturesque village of Ansouis with views of the 11th century Château d’Ansouis and a backdrop of the magnificent Luberon mountains.
The winery is set in the centre of 13 hectares of vines in the appellation of cotes du Luberon.
Wine has been produced in this area since the Roman times because of the climate and its close proximity to the Via Domitia, one of the major Roman roads running through Provence from Italy to Spain.
The vineyard sits at an altitude of 300 m on a bedrock of Cretacian limestone. The domaine is in region of the Pays d’Aigues which is largely sand of the Miocene period and molasses de Cucuron Tortonien. The soil is a mixture of lighter sandy soils ans stony clay soils. Because of the limestone there is good underground water, and small stream runs through the centre of the domaine.
The climate is temperate Mediterranean with some continental influences in winter. There is abundant sunshine, about 2600 hours on average each year . The rainfall is mainly between November and March with hot dry summers. The altitude produces cooler evenings than in other parts of southern Rhone and is subject to lighter Mistral, because o the protection of the Luberon Mountains. These winds are generally good for the health of the grapes.
