The golf between sea and mountain

Since Venus bent over its cradle, Provence always knew how to receive. And in " the orchard of France ", there where the water flows under our feet without ever drying up, the ground welcomes magnificent golf courses between turquoise blue swimming pools and four stars holiday residences.

Here, in Provence, we do not live the golf half. Courses are hilly on a red and rocky ground, the lawn spared by the humidity remains dry (but green or slightly brown under frosts) and the surrounding vegetation, Mediterranean in its genes, spreads its layers of shadows under the brilliant summer sun. In Provence, we play between sea and mountain, from the golf course of Frégate, perched on the heights of Bandol offering an amazing panorama on the Inslands of Hyères until the alpine Gap-Bayard, a course of oxygenation under eternal snows.

Provence and golf

If the golf takes place in "bass" and "high" season, useless to specify that here, the "bass" season is reduced only in four months (from November till February). The golfer will feel maybe in the heart of winter some itch due to the cold at the time of arming his swing but he will rarely bring out the umbrella. And in summer months, to close one 18 holes by a birdie in front of the clubhouse near 22 o'clock under an orange-coloured sun is a big moment of golf, deserving of a triumphant arrival to Saint Andrews. It is for that reason that numerous British golfers, in search of more beautiful skies, like so much playing in Provence.

The peculiarity of the Provençal golf courses is that they are often implanted in natural sites returning the winning party, whatever is the card of score : the golf course of Orange at feet of the Ancient Theater, Avignon and Châteaublanc under the glance of the Ventoux Mountain and the Popes' Palace in Avignon, Provence Country Club in some bustles from Fontaine de Vaucluse, Port Royal leaned to Sainte Victoire, Servanes hung on the Alpilles, the Baux dominated by the famous medieval castle or more in the East, Pierrevert and the regional park of the Luberon, the list is not exhaustive. Difficult indeed, in front of such panoramas, to remain the eye riveted on a ball…

The golf a lifestyle

Maybe it is because the golfer lets himself be seduced by a generous nature that the Provençal courses do not lay down arms so easily. The best architects, among whom the symbolic Severiano Ballesteros (Port Royal), Peter Cannon (Aix-Marseille) or Jean Garaialde (Saumane) often had to compose with a landscape with impregnable bastions. Look at the number of compact golf of 9, even 6 and 5 holes which drew their furrow between two hills of limestone or the unbridgeable canyons. It is in this restless landscape, where it is often necessary to compose with the mistral, where every golfer has to take in his bag a big dose of patience and humility.

In Provence, the "after golf" is rich in propositions : between gastronomy with Provençal and Mediterranean flavours accompanied with fruity or obust wines and cultural or tourist visits (a chance for these ladies who let greens to their husbands), everybody meets for another discovery which would almost make forget the whimsical trajectories of this sacred small white ball…
