Pierrevert

Department of Alpes de Haute Provence
Population: 3 389 people (1999)

Pierrevert is an old village, with old history; indeed gallo-Roman vestiges give evidence of the interest of the people for this place since antiquity. From the top of rock dressed in ivy the small perched village looks at Provence. In XII-th century Pierrevert possesses two castles, a parochial church and two rural churches.

In 1701 an earthquake destroys partially the ramparts which dated XII-th century, and then with the French revolution it is the last castle which is destroyed. Of its past Pierrevert still preserves its houses with medieval doors, the ruins of the ramparts which for a long time protected the village and some monuments should be seen.

The inhabitants of Pierrevert cultivate their ground since a long time, they produce olives, cereal but it is for the gustative quality of their fruits that they are renowned.

The village possesses the last wine-producing cooperative of the department and two rather important private domains. In passing to Pierrevert enjoy of authentic produces of Provence: delicious fruits and wine to taste in moderation.

Situated on the borders of Vaucluse, Var and the Bouches du Rhone, this small village of Provence is in the heart of regional natural reserve of Luberon. Ideal point of departure for hikes on the paths of Provence, the GR4 passes by Pierrevert. The golf 18 holes attract numerous amateurs of this sport and nature.

Their cherries pass to be the best of Provence, the inhabitants of Pierrevert are called " manjo-grafien " what means " eaters of cherries ".

- Church of the village

The church it was destroyed partially during the earthquake and later in the revolution. The construction was begun in the XII-th, during the works of renovation the gate of the XIII-th century of the church Holy Jean (the other church of the village) was integrated. This church is a listed building.

- Gate St Joseph

During the earthquake of 1701, the gate was destroyed, then reconstructs by keeping parts still in good state. In 1930 this one failed disappears to allow the high carts to pass there but the mayor opposed to it. It is due to him that we can even admire it today. This gate of XVII-th century is a listed building.

- The Chapel Saint Patrice

The chapel is situated away from the village in the direction of Sainte Tulle. It was renewed, but date of the construction remains difficult to determine, several styles of architecture are mix. Saint Patrice is the patron saint of the village; the inhabitants dedicated him this chapel and still thank him to having saved them from the terrible plague of 1631. It is a listed building.
