Simiane la Rotonde

Situated in 650 metres in height between Lure Mountain, the Mont Ventoux and Luberon, Simiane the Rotunda is one of the most beautiful villages perched from Haute Provence, right by the Colorado from provence, at one o'clock of Aix-en-Provence or Avignon.

Transported in an environment of XVIII-th century, you discover by crossing the paved alleys the old doors of the buildings of XVII-th and XVIII-th centuries, the Rotunda, strange tower, element of the ancient castle of XII-th century built by Raimon II of Agoult, Count of Sault, the church Sainte Victoire of XVI-th century, the bell tower of the ancient church Saint Jean in the heart of the old village, the Halle coverings, the house of the novelist Ponson of Terrail (creator of Rocambole) and the chapel Notre dame de Pitié on the hill in 200 metres of the Rotunda.

Monuments

- The Rotunda (My. Historic), donjon of the medieval castle.

This tower built in the XII century, perched at the top of the rocky spur where became established the village, is the donjon of the fort of the AGOULT-SIMIANE, the powerful seigneurial family which dominates during seven centuries the country of Apt and the country of Sault. Seen with the exterieur, this massive building does not let suspect the magnificent Romanic architecture which it shelters: in the first floor of the Rotunda is a room surmounted with a high ribbed dome basing on twelve pillars decorated with small columns, with capital and with human masks which separate twelve niches. Classified Ancient memorial in 1841, the Rotunda attracts today more than 10 000 guests by season. Reception of the tourists to Simiane, place of exhibitions, conferences, concerts, it welcomes every summer in July - August an international Festival of Ancient Music:

Access

At Apt take the D22 to Rustrel and Gignac then to continue 10 km on the same road until Simiane the Rotunda.

From Forcalquier, cross Mane by D4100 turn right on the D5 to Saint Michel l'Observatoire cross Revest des Brousses then at col de Val Martine take D18 direction Carniol before arriving at Simiane la Rotonde.
