Bandol : small port of Provence...
This place is known since millenniums by the sailors who came there to shelter during storms. The bay protected from winds and gives the sensation of a haven of peace coiled between the hills of pines and willows. In the end of 16-th century Duke of Epernon, governor of Provence, chooses this place to build there a fort. It is for military Antoine Boyer that the fief is given, his descendants will make famous Bandol from the 18-th century due to its wine. The port and the village develop, wines of Bandol are exported in great quantities by sea route, and their fame even reaches the table of the king of France.
The bay sheltered winds, its sandy beaches and small hidden creeks, attract the tourists even before Saint Tropez is fashionable. From 1923, Bandol is classified sea resort, the opening of a casino does not delay and the tourists begin to hurry up towards this small part of Provence. Marcel Pagnol, Mistinguett, Fernandel or still Aldous Huxley comes to take advantage of the peace of mind of this place and Raimu possesses a house on the heights of the village. The houses of the village hang on the hillside and offer for many an open view on the sea. The pleasure port of 1600 places welcomes boats of any sizes; it is the 9-th French pleasure port. This studio built by the artist himself is constituted with seven buildings decorated with frescoes, twelve rooms of exhibition and a presentation of sculptures outdoors.
